October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I know it is already October 22, but that doesn’t matter. Let’s speak up together and raise awareness for domestic violence.

Domestic Violence affects people at an astounding rate. According to The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, “on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime.”

Any form of violence thrives on silence and secrets. Once we bring it to light; break the silence and not keep secrets, we gain control over the violence. What are some ways to bring domestic violence to light, you ask? Head on over to The National Network to End Domestic Violence to see what they are doing all month. You can participate in any of these tasks. Some of the ideas are to volunteer or donate, wear purple (which is the color of domestic violence awareness month), speak out, read a book, and much more.

If you or someone you know is suffering from the effects of domestic violence, safety is priority. Please work with a professional if you are unsafe leaving a violent relationship. If you are not sure where to go, please contact me at 860-501-9767 or 941-926-4801 or heal@fastmail.com and I will help you find where to go in a safe way.

What are you going to do for the remainder of the month? Respond to this blog to let me know what you plan on doing. I will be talking with at least one person per day about domestic violence, raising awareness for it.
