Seeking Safety

Group therapy is a nice addition to individual therapy as clients are able to interact with others who are dealing with the same symptoms, get support from each other, and gain strength from each other. As a matter of fact, for some clients, combining individual and group therapy reduces the time needed in therapy for resolution of symptoms.

WHAT:
Group therapy is offered online to adults in Connecticut and Florida through a HIPAA compliant web platform twice per week. The model, Seeking Safety, utilizes 25 topics to help people obtain a feeling of safety from past traumas/PTSD and substance use staying present-focused. Seeking Safety is a research-based treatment model, meaning it has been shown to be effective in research studies.

WHO:
The group is open to anyone 18 years or older with substance abuse and a history of trauma. It is not exclusive to first responders, but many first responders participate in the groups. It is not open to anyone currently in an unsafe situation such as domestic violence or feeling suicidal in the past twelve months.

WHEN:
It runs for 13 weeks at 1.5 hours per session two days per week with a maximum of 10 members. Once the 13 week session starts, no one else is able to join that session. Therefore, if a session has already started, new members will be put on the list for the next 13 week session.

WHERE:
The group meets online, so you can sign on wherever you feel most comfortable. It it requested that you find a quiet location where you will not be disturbed, turn off all electronics (other than the computer), close all other open web pages, and let others know you cannot be disturbed for the next 1.5 hours. Treat the online group as if you were going to a group session in the community.
